I became a Toastmaster in August 2012 since I knew I needed to be better at public speaking, though I've stayed to become a better leader and mentor. An unexpected benefit of this is helping the dementia patients I work with by being able to effectively communicate with them when they get confused. Also, getting octogenarians to leave their rooms and participate in activities can be surprisingly hard, but it's made easier when you can think of reasons to come on the fly.
