Backstory
BackstorySnik Swordswinger never stayed anywhere long enough to be known—only long enough to be remembered when things went wrong. Born into a life tied to the road, he learned early that movement was survival. His father repaired wheels, his mother kept accounts when there was coin to count, and neither expected permanence. By adolescence, Snik had already seen more roads than most men twice his age. He joined his first caravan guard unit not out of desperation, but instinct. The road made sense to him: patterns, risks, people. He learned quickly where danger hides—not in the obvious places, but in the pauses, the silences, the subtle shifts in routine. He was never the loudest guard, nor the one eager for glory. Instead, he became the one merchants quietly requested. Reliable. Observant. Alive. Years passed in motion. Forest tracks, desert routes, mountain passes. With each journey, he picked up fragments of language, habits of strangers, and the ability to read intent before words were spoken. The defining job came recently. A high-value caravan, undermanned but well-paid, cutting through territory known for coordinated raids. Snik took the contract without hesitation. The first attack was messy but survivable. The second was not supposed to be. They held anyway. When the caravan finally reached its destination, battered but intact, the merchant paid each survivor. Then he did something unusual—he opened a locked chest and withdrew a blade. The sword was old, perfectly balanced, its edge catching light in a way steel should not. “Earned,” the merchant said. Since that day, Snik has found ordinary contracts lacking. The road still calls, but now it feels different—less like escape, more like direction. The sword hums, faintly, when danger approaches. And Snik has started to wonder whether he’s still choosing his path… or following one. |
